Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a significant move to streamline legal strategies and proceedings, the West Bengal government has formed a high-level committee that will oversee all major legal procedures involving the state. This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The committee will be supervised by the Chief Secretary and will function as a nodal body for all legal affairs, providing coordination between various departments and legal representatives. This comes in the backdrop of several high-profile legal matters that have recently involved the state government and its departments.
The panel will include senior ministers and key members of Mamata’s cabinet: Malay Ghatak, who has experience in legal affairs; Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of State for Finance and Health; Bratya Basu, Education Minister; Shashi Panja, Minister for Women and Child Development; and Aroop Biswas, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs.
According to sources in Nabanna, the committee’s purpose will not be limited to legal representation in courts but will also extend to monitoring ongoing litigations, coordinating with legal experts, and ensuring timely action in matters involving constitutional or administrative implications.
